Facts about Radiata Pine

  • Radiata Pine (Pinus Radiata) is a light coloured coniferous softwood that grows exceptionally well in New Zealand.
  • Soil and climate conditions in New Zealand ensure that Radiata Pine harvested here is among the highest quality in the world.
  • Radiata Pine is a relatively tall tree with a round straight stem and small branches along the length, and reaches maturity in around 28 years.
  • Radiata Pine logs tend to be relatively free of internal defects and growth stress. Trees are pruned at different stages of their growth cycle with the majority pruned to a height of at least 4 metres. This results in a large amount of knot free wood in the lower part of the trunk when the tree is harvested.
  • It is a medium density wood.
  • Radiata Pine machines well for most applications and produces a good finish when cut and sanded. Paint and other coatings dry to a good finish. Radiata Pine will take staining and coating.
  • Radiata Pine is easy to nail, but still holds nails well. Bending and strength properties are equal to most other softwood species used for similar purposes.
  • New Zealand Radiata Pine clearwood is one of the best clearwoods in the world.

Forests generate carbon credits by processing CO2 in the atmosphere and storing carbon in the wood. Wood is carbon neutral, since no more carbon is emitted in it's whole life cycle than is absorbed from the atmosphere when growing.
